On my first day in Mumbai, I took a walk. Fr. Trevor Miranda said to me, “I’m afraid you’ve only seen the slums of India. There are really better places here, I promise.”
With Fr. Miranda's help, I was able to see more than poverty – I saw hope. Fr. Miranda founded a system of 450 informal schools, some focused on improving educational opportunities for women, others teaching basic literacy to children who have dropped out of school. Via car, auto rickshaw, and motorcycle, Fr. Miranda keeps an active schedule. His efforts to connect urban to rural, middle class to "untouchables" show an unwavering commitment a core value of the Society of Jesus he belongs to, pursuing justice for the poor and marginalized.
